Courses
There are many courses to choose from within certain fields. If you feel unsure of which course is the right one for you, don't hesitate to speak to the careers and employability service in school. You can also contact the Student Services within the college to ask for some more information.
Details of courses can be found on the website of your chosen college in a course directory where it will outline the main objectives of the course and any compulsory components.
There is also different levels of qualifications which can be attained in university. A National Certificate (NC) normally leads towards employment of further study in college at a higher level. This is most appropriate for anyone leaving school without many qualifications and combines a number of different teaching methods. A Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a one year course and can lead to further study in college or potentially into first year of university. A Higher National Diploma (HNC) is a one year course which is a progression from an HNC, this can act as a stepping stone into employment or second/third year at university.

Application Process
Most college applications are submitted through their own website by using an "Apply now" option once you have opened your specific course. You will then be prompted to fill out your details such as: contact details, school details and qualifications and you may also be asked to write a personal statement. A personal statement is a summary of why you want to be selected for the course and why they should select you.
The timeline for college applications vary from institution to institution but once the application is submitted you will be contacted to inform you of any next steps e.g. interview. Following an interview the university will decide on if they would like to offer you a place or not. This can come in different terms:
"Conditional Offer" - This means the college would like to offer you a place IF you achieve certain grades in your upcoming or pending exams.
"Unconditional Offer" - This means the college would like to offer you a place on the course regardless of your exam outcome. This could be due to already having the necessary qualifications or experience.
"Unsuccessful" - This may be due to a lack of prerequisite qualifications needed to keep on top of the course.
Each college application will be different to the next but there are always people to guide you through it. Have a look online at the college you are applying to where there should be a student section with guidance and helpful tips. Your careers and employability advisors are always happy to help with any questions you have!
